This is a 4 x week course. The project can be completed by the average student in this time however additional weeks may be added where needed. Choose your day to attend, morning or evening.
The literal translation for ‘Kimono’ is ‘a thing to wear’
”How will you wear yours?”
Well, that is the beauty of the Kimono. There are so many ways to wear one…
“in a lifetime of ways!”
Join our sewing sessions and learn some sewing skills to build on for your lifetime!
We are of course, drawing inspiration from the authentic Japanese Kimono, which can be a magnificent work of Art. You will make a simplified version. Conducive to everyday wearing and function!
From a handy, ‘cover all’ transition from the bath before dressing, for the holiday beach / by the pool to a most elegant stunning ‘Wow’ piece for a party, or formal event…and everything in between.
Once you know how to master your Kimono pattern, you will be able to apply the process to almost any fabric. Though experience and skill is needed for more challenging fabrics such as silk satin, velvet or chiffon.
For this workshop we are assuming that most students will be beginner to intermediate standard and so we will recommend using a woven fabric such as a light cotton, linen or cotton blend fabric. But more experienced sewers are most welcome to join us and we will guide you in the making process, with tips to handle more challenging fabrics.
THE PROCESS
You will learn to interpret a paper pattern
Get to know your own personal body measurements to choose the correct size or adapt from the paper pattern.
Choose the correct fabric
Lay fabric correctly ready for cutting
Correct placement of paper pattern
How to mark out and cut your fabric
How to pin your pieces together correctly to achieve optimal results when sewing.
How to finish your Kimono to a professional standard.
You’ll gain experience on a sewing machine ( and learn to troubleshoot) while stitching your kimono. You will gain the skills needed to go on to make many more Kimonos with your paper pattern applied to different fabrics.
And you’ll gain the skills to begin your sewing journey, to make other garments.
Materials needed:
You will need aprox 3 meters 145cm width ( more if width is narrower ) in a woven Cotton or Linen of your choice.
We will provide the sewing machines and all other tools needed for the project.
For the average student this project will take 4 x weeks. Additional weeks can be added @€37 per session where needed.
This course is suitable for beginners who have completed our 1 x day sewing machine beginners workshop or who have a little experience using a sewing machine. And for the more experienced or advanced sewer.
